General Introduction

1. 21 Tank Brigade was commanded throughout the series of operations under review by
     Brigadier D. Dawnay, D.S.O.

2. The order of battle of the Brigade was as follows:
    HQ.
        21 Tank Brigade HQ
    RAC
       12 Royal Tank Regiment
        48 Royal Tank Regiment
        145 Royal Armoured Corps (this regiment was disbanded in Jan 45 and was replaced
        by NIH, who came under command on 5 Dec 44).
        272 Forward Delivery Squadron.
    RE
        HQ Troop 3 Field Squadron RE.
    Signals
        21 Tank Brigade Signals.
    ST
        107 Company RASC (Tank Brigade)
    Medical
        6 Light Field Ambulance.
    Ordnance
        21 Tank Brigade Ordnance Field Park.
    REME
        21 Tank Brigade Workshop.
    Provost
        21 Tank Brigade Provost Section.

3. In Phases I and IV of the operations the Brigade was supported by 24 Field Regiment (SP)     Royal Artillery.

4. The Brigade was equipped primarily with the CHURCHILL tank. During Phases I - III of the     operations two troops in each Squadron were equipped with SHERMAN tanks owing to the     non-availability of the CHURCHILL with 75 mm gun. The SHERMANS were, however,     replaced by the CHURCHILL Mark VII for the final Phase of the campaign.

5. The Brigade was under command of 1 CANADIAN CORPS for the period 25 Aug 44 - 8     Feb 45. For the remainder of the campaign the Brigade was under command of 5 Corps.
