Churchill Tanks - Photographs and Names

3rd Tank Battalion Scots Guards

Notes

Regimental Nickname: The Kiddies
Given to the Regiment, when in 1686 James II formed a large camp on Hounslow Heath as a precaution against unrest in London. The (then) existing Guards regiments were present, and the Scots, being the junior of three, were given the name.

'A' Squadron named after Scottish towns.
'B' Squadron named after Scottish islands.
'C' Squadron named after Scottish rivers.

The regiment kept the infantry nomenclature 'Platoon' for the smallest fighting unit.
Following a Royal Armoured Corps directive the number of troops/platoons per squadron was reduced from five to four. The assets of Nos. 5 and 6 Platoons were distributed to other platoons, the numbers 5 and 6 being dropped.
